Induction
Assignment
Media text:
For my media text I chose XXL music magazine, this magazine
specialises in Rap music and is very popular in the United States with the
biggest and richest rappers being on there magazine. XXL has been around since
the late 90’s, their first issue was released in 1997 and has a well-known
website which also has all the information for that week’s issue of the
magazine.
Audience:
The audience will be for people with a strong interest in
the rap industry, roughly between the ages of 17 and 35. The Audience will be
attracted to the magazine by the use of language that will be in the magazine
such as slang, informal words, and specific words that relate to a particular
artist. The magazine will appeal to people of all ethnicities as rap is a
worldwide industry that people from different backgrounds have a great interest
in. Eye-catching headings and pictures attract the reader and will make them
want to read the magazine.
“Piracy is
destroying the music industry”
I am against the motion that “piracy is destroying the music
industry”
Releasing music for free on the internet increases the
publicity of the artist, despite the artist obtaining no revenue for their work,
the artist will receive money from tours shows and gigs that will be made
available from the downloading of their material. Furthermore it was proven
that the actual sales of music in the industry did not decline since the start
of Piracy, they have stayed the same, so piracy is not actually taking money
from the industry.
Liam Gallagher told vibe magazine “Downloading is the same
as I did, I used to tape-record the songs, the successes that I liked on the
radio”. Piracy is the best method for recognition, Kanye West told XXL
“Downloading music allows you to take risks and listen to a huge variety of
music whereas buying an album is a risk because sometimes you really don’t know
what you’re paying for”, Downloading music free allows you to listen to the
material before you buy it, this way there are no risks and if you decide to
buy it after you’ve downloaded it then you know what you’re paying money for.
Downloading music is easy and more efficient, it can be done
from anywhere as long as there is internet access, this means that artists can
get their music around quicker, and get recognised faster which will eventually
lead to sales and tours.
The Music industry has enough money to make profit even with
music piracy going on, most artists are against the fact that music piracy is
destroying the industry. The industry is not in terminal decline but still
holding ground and producing healthy profits. Here are some recent quotes from
famous artists on Music Piracy.
Sean Paul: “Before there was the internet, there was people
selling mix tapes and CDs with your music on it- they sell it, they benefit
from it. “I get promotion out of it, which is a good thing for me, because
people like my song and put on a stage show”
Naughty Boy: “I don’t like the idea of people thinking
you’re never going to get rich from music. You can, even with illegal
downloading.”
Jessie j: “It’s like going to the hairdressers, having your
hair cut and running out. “you can’t make music for free, you can’t live for
free. If people illegally download your album it’s very likely that you won’t
make another one”.
Piracy is ultimately a touchy subject. There’s a lot that
ties up things legally, but it does a lot of good that people don’t realize. In
the end, it doesn’t deserve the massive barrage of hate it gets.
